So every summer without fail, I change my hair somewhat drastically. Whether it's styling it a different way, cutting it, or dye-ing it the color of a crayola crayon, it's my way of de-stressing and my oath to having a great summer. This summer I decided to do something that I've been wanting to do for a while but was a bit anxious about.
If you followed my blog waaaay back in the day, you might recall me having a sad attempt at Bettie bangs. I was 17, cut my hair in the bathroom on whim without the slightest idea of how exactly to cut them, and though I thought it looked awesome, I was sadly mistaken.

Okay, maybe they weren't
too bad, but I cut them too wide for my face shape and they didn't suit me well. I even had friends tell me to grow them out because they looked bad.
Fast forward 3 years later (where I now have my makeup sorted out thank heavens), I wanted to give Bettie bangs a second chance. This time I asked one of my friends who is in cosmetology school to give me advice and possibly cut my hair. She thought it would look fabulous and agreed to do the honors.
After my bangs were cut, I wanted to add a little color to the mix, blue to be exact. Usually my hair takes to bleach and color relatively well in one sitting. For some odd reason, my hair wouldn't take to the bleach as well as it usually does (we used 40 volume and my hair wouldn't get as blonde as it needed to be). We tried again the next day with no avail, but went ahead and attempted to add color anyways. Again, my hair was being stubborn and wouldn't take to the color even with multiple attempts. My friend was afraid of damaging my hair too much and thought we should try again in a week or so. Having the same temperament as my hair though, I wanted blue and wanted it now. I paid a visit to my local Ulta store and discovered Anastasia Hypercolor Brow and Hair Powder in Electric Blue. I then went home and went to work.

The instructions were super simple: apply a hair oil, mousse, or leave-in conditioner, etc. to the hair, rub the color on, and set with hair spray. It was the actual application of the hair powder that was a bit difficult. I had to rub the hair powder in my hair for quite a bit before the bright color would stick. After trying to get more color on my hair than everywhere else, this was the final result:
I was happy with the color pay off and the gradient effect I achieved. Even though it was difficult to get the powder to stick, I think I may just stick with this rather than attempting to dye-ing it again. This way I can lessen the damage to my hair and deep condition it without worrying about losing color/touching it up every so often (I'd just have to put more powder on).
Today was the first day I wore my hair in a set and I loved the way it looked:

I'm happy I faced my fear of repeating the past with a Bettie bang because it came out looking awesome! I'm really excited to try different sets with this look because I don't have to worry about what to do with the front of my hair, making styling a tad bit easier. Hopefully this hair is a foreshadowing of a great summer!
